Sleep Disorders in Married, Female, Shift-Working Nurses

Abstract
This study explored the sleep disorder-related experiences of married female nurses. The phenomenological approach, using Colaizzi's strategy was adopted. Participants included ten married female shift-working nurses. Based on our in-depth interviews with the participants, we formulated twelve topics from six categories. The categories included: exhausted body due to insufficient sleep; depression; sexual dysfunction; the foe named insomnia; daytime drowsiness; somatization symptoms; and adaptation and compromise. The twelve topics included: accumulation of fatigue; daily depression; difficulties regarding regular sexual life; sexual difficulties; hope to sleep; anxiety and sensitivity due to insomnia; changes in circardian rhythm; carelessness from the changes in life rhythms; numbness through daily sleepiness; fear of poor health; presence of health problems; and adaptation and compromise in everyday life. Based on this research, we suggest the development and validation of sleep disorder programs dedicated to enhancing the quality of sleep of shift-working nurses.
